I come from a long line of teachers. My mom was an elementary school teacher, my sister and her husband were music teachers, one of my nieces is a special ed teacher,
and her husband is the principal of a school in Ohio. My other niece was an elementary school teacher, until she “retired” to raise a family and travel with her husband, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marines.
Several of my cousins were teachers, as well as one of my great-aunts, and my brother-in-law’s brother and his wife just retired from the school system. As you can see, I’ve been surrounded by teachers
practically my entire life, so I have a special affection for teachers. They make me feel at home, and remind me of my childhood years.
I’m especially proud of my mom, who, at the age of 50, went back to
college and received her four-year teaching degree. When she went to college, a two-year degree was all that was required to receive a teaching license. Over the years, more education became required,
so she could only teach in one-room country schools, and teaching jobs for them were very limited. Returning to college and getting a four-year teaching degree would allow her to teach in the city schools,
where jobs were more plentiful. Going back to college was very difficult after being out of school for such a long period of time, but my mom never faultered. I especially remember a required art class she took.
Now, my mom wasn’t the least bit artistic, and she had to create something in clay in this particular class. She ended up making a cute little black Scottie dog, and laughed for years about her “creation”, even
though I thought she did a really good job with it. She “proudly” displayed it in our living room and laughed loudly when anyone made a reference to it. I get that “warm all over” feeling whenever I think of her
art project, and can still hear her laughter to this day. My mom was one special lady and I’ll miss her as long as I live.
